Are you a young woman who’s looking into a career surrounding motorsport?
It is no hidden fact that motorsport is predominantly a male sport; and that can be quite confronting.
There are many women coming up in the ranks of motorsport, whether that be as a driver, comms manager, team director, mechanic or engineer. There is more and more representation as the years go on.
Categories like Formula One, Extreme E and Formula E have a more than usual female presence within those paddocks; not to mention W series in F1.
Big names such as Jamie Chadwick, Charlotte Sefton, Molly Taylor, Natalie Pinkham and Susie Wolff are general motorsport names if you’re an avid follower – worldwide.
These three names alone show young women and girls (that’s you!) that their dreams are possible; but don’t forget that our male figures in the sport, such as 4x world champion Sebastian Vettel, have said it’s about time women get involved – and I agree. As a young girl, I was obsessed with all things cars, racing and engines; I still am, if you couldn’t tell…
I stumbled upon the big question: Who do I look up to and how can I get involved?
Australian motorsport is behind the recent times in most instances, such as female drivers. However, Supercars has plenty of strong female figures such as Riana Crehan, Jessica Dane, and Betty Klimenko. As for getting involved, FIA Girls On Track is fantastic for helping young women get their foot in the door.
Personal experience; they help you get in contact with the right mentors and enable you to make connections – which is huge in motorsport.
It helps provide experiences and pathways to get our women involved in ways never done before.
A booming podcast I believe you need to know about is called Girls On The Grid. It is so informative and helps to #breakthebias while inspiring women, and men, with the progress of wonderful women in the great sport.
It gives us an idea on who to look towards; and it’s Australian based with Priya Richards and Tenayah Mcleod as the hosts. Not to mention, it’s the inspiration you need.
Girls power girls, so what better way than to check out different conversations.
Having connections made through FIA Girls On Track is a major leg boost into the field of your dreams (but be sure to stay in contact), then having the qualifications to help back your goals is the next step.
Not to mention proudly supporting the passion you have for motorsport.
Continue to persevere and make connections, jump at every opportunity that’s thrown your way – make no regrets and make a change in motorsport.
You could become one of the very few names I’ve mentioned. There is no wrong way into the sport.
So, how are you going to pursue your career in motorsport?
