What an eventful race on the streets of Baku.
We saw both Scuderia Ferrari’s retire with a hydraulic issue and power unit failure, deeming both cars to be somewhat unreliable. Charles Leclerc (24) and Carlos Sainz (27) left disappointed after the past few weeks on track, leaving Leclerc in the dark with the championship fight and some unfortunate doubts regarding the future.
Porpoising made a stronger comeback for seven-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton (37). The issue saw Lewis looking worse for wear at the end of the race, his back hurting quite a lot – understandably with how the ride looked over the 51 laps. He pulled through in P4, a stellar stint considering the circumstances – Toto Wolff (50) apologising for the state of the car.
With the drama mentioned above, we had more with Yuki Tsunoda (22) and part of his rear wing falling off mid race, turning heads in question.
Finally we saw both McLaren’s make their way into the points with Daniel Ricciardo (32) in P8 and Lando Norris (24) in P9 – but not without some questionable team orders, decisions, and radio conversation. However still a good team result!
Both Oracle RedBull’s led the pack, building their gap as the race developed. Team orders instructing Sergio Perez (32) and Max Verstappen (24) that there’d be no fighting – the team aware of where that led with experience from 2018. All worked out with cars 1 and 11 ending on the podium with Verstappen in P1 and Perez in P2, accompanied by Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver George Russell (24) in P3. Oracle RedBull now leading the constructors championship by 80 points – it’s really heating up the fight.
Out of our 20 car grid, we had 15 finish the race in Baku this weekend. Ultimately a crazy, jam-packed and totally unexpected race!
Until next time,
