Baku 2022.
It’s already been a competitive season with our 2022 grid, but how did this weekend contribute to that? Let’s unpack how the drivers facing the road to F1 performed on the streets of Baku.
It’s always exciting to watch up and coming talent, but this weekend saw some variety. Felipe Drugovich (22), this guy had some serious pace and determination. Especially through qualifying, maintaining his spot in the top three. The Brazilian is most definitely someone to keep your eye on; promising future ahead.
Baku is a quick street circuit, not leaving much room for error. A red flag deployed in qualifying with Ayumu Iwasa (20), finding the wall after dominating the top step the entire qualifying session. Disappointing after he’d been given an opportunistic package on the car.
The entire field of nineteen drivers appeared to be put together as they headed out on track – meaning it would be a quick and eventful time in Azerbaijan.
The top steps were occupied by an all RedBull junior driver lockout, something that was quite exciting to see – given their competitiveness this year. A stellar result for Jüri Vips (21), Liam Lawson (20), and Dennis Hauger (19).
The feature race saw a reverse grid – a confusing concept that seems almost unjustifiable as each driver put their all into qualifying. However, the race was still undoubtedly entertaining.
It was pure chaos with Dennis Hauger, losing position and making contact with the barrier – a red flag given. Throughout the race, more yellows and shunts were seen, resulting in a handful of retired cars. Federik Vesti (20), declared the winner, accompanied by Jehan Daruvala (23), and Liam Lawson on the top steps after the last lap was completed behind a deployed safety car.
With one final race of the weekend to go, it still seems to be a RedBull driver lockout once again! Stay tuned over Sunday to see who comes out on top.
