2022 Canadian Grand Prix – Qualifying

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montreal! What a beautiful place.

Formula One is back in Canada after the short, long awaited break with the Covid-19 Pandemic. A 4.361-kilometre track with two DRS zones that is known for some mega racing. The fourteen corners should provide ample entertainment for fans world-wide on Sunday!

An early morning in Australia for qualifying in Canada, but lots to uncover! Let’s get into it.

Q1 started out slow as the track was soaked, spray running thick off and behind cars as they started to get some times out. A big contender to the session was Charles Leclerc (24) and his grid penalty due to new components, accompanied by Yuki Tsunoda (22) with his grid penalty.

Porpoising was a common occurrence throughout the paddock, however it seemed to be less aggressive than in Baku. Mercedes-AMG Petronas still looking the worst out of the grid.

As the sessions progressed, the pace was picked up. Alexander Albon (26) found his nose caressing the barrier, a quick yellow deployed as he got himself out with minor damage. He had some confidence and pace out there, later just missing out on the top ten.

Sergio Perez (32) caused a red flag with a steering lock fiasco, unfortunate but common due to the track conditions; lots of water pooling. Lando Norris (22) misses out ending with a P14 as an issue with the power unit arose, the team not too sure of the cause but aware of the issue.

Daniel Ricciardo (32) looked like he had some decent pace, ending with a P9 – promising after the last few weeks. Both HAAS drivers struck their best qualifying all season with a P5 and P6 – a mega result for young Mick Schumacher (23). Lewis Hamilton (37) improved with a P4, the best we’ve seen him for a while.

A first since 2012, Fernando Alonso (40) on the front row of the grid. An applaudable stint by the oldie of the paddock, showing that age is just a number. His stubborn performance is a massive contending threat for pole sitter Max Verstappen (24) and the seat directly behind him with Carlos Sainz (27) for the race.

Esteban Ocon (25) in P7, George Russell (24) in P8, Daniel Ricciardo in P9, and Zhou Guanyu (23) in P10, solidifying their positions during Q3 to finish off the front of the pack.

A new, jumbled grid for the Canadian Grand Prix. This will be an interesting race, especially for a place with lots of opportunities to pass. Tune in tomorrow at 4am AEST to catch the race!

Until next time,
