Lewis Hamilton backs Naomi Schiff

Over the years, there have been more women breaking the bias and getting involved in motorsport. The industry is undeniably male-dominated, however the spotlight is now on helping women become more accepted in the motorsport world.

Sky Sports F1 team have recently had ex-racing drivers Naomi Schiff (28) and Danica Patrick (40) join the broadcasting during some weekends; offering great insight and diversity. This has been absolutely fantastic for representation of women in motorsport, but we’ve seen some negativity on all platforms.

Naomi Schiff has been on the receiving end of recent twitter hate; an unfortunate and distasteful occasion. Schiff has opened the door with reputable knowledge, experiences, and opinions – she’s shown women around the globe that no dream is too big.

The hate on twitter has questioned her ability and accuracy of her knowledge. It’s disappointing to say the least. Women in motorsport shouldn’t be frowned upon by followers, it should be celebrated. Schiff is incredibly qualified to assist the Sky Sports F1 team; she gives young girls the ability to see they belong.

Sir Lewis Hamilton (37), seven-time world champion, has spoken out against the current sound waves of hate on social media – backing the ex-racing driver Schiff. He knows what it’s like to cop the hateful comments people leave behind a screen, saying he feels obligated to stand up and speak out. He’s there to encourage and help make that change, closing the diversity gap we often see in sporting fields. An important thing to note as a sporting follower – people make changes and this is one that needs to be of focus.

Patrick even spoke up, putting the hateful comments to bed. These highly talented and knowledgeable women shouldn’t be questioned over whether or not they should be assisting the broadcasting teams – their experience in all sorts of categories (and successes) speaks for the words that aren’t spoken.

The Sky Sports F1 team have spoken out, squashing any possible comments towards Schiff. Her passion and experience has been applauded by the award winning broadcasting team and acknowledged. ‘Her experiences as a racing driver and her passion for the sport have been welcomed by millions’. It’s clear that Schiff is an excellent addition and a highly appreciated personnel on the team. Yes it’s about diversity and representation with people of colour and women in motorsport, but she knows her stuff – it shouldn’t be questioned or detested by Formula 1 followers. Naomi Schiff being involved in motorsport like she is, is the push towards change we need.

There is still such a long way to go for inclusivity in motorsport with women, but with individuals who have a platform, such as Hamilton, so much can be done. Raise the conversation and encourage the women around you to get involved. We drive each other in many ways, so why not do that positively?

Until next time.
