Scott McLaughlin, driver of the number 3 Penzoil Team Penske Indycar has taken the top spot for qualifying, smashing previous historic records.
McLaughlin, previous 76-time pole position winner for the Australian Supercars Championship, has conducted incredible history for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday, 20th May 2024 (AEST).
A new lap record was created during the Fast Six, the Kiwi driver showing exactly the type of talent Australian and New Zealander motorsport fans are used to seeing.
McLaughlin clocked in at 234.220mph, the fastest four-lap average, making history at the Indy500 while beating his Team Penske teammate, Will Power.
The Kiwi will have a front start next weekend for the Indianapolis 500 in his yellow submarine, the excitement of the fans around the world sure to light a motivational fire for the successful driver in his third season.
56-wins in the Supercars Championship and 1-win in Indycar this season, the Kiwi masterclass had a few comments about his stellar performance in compared to his Australian records.
“I said to myself, it felt like a shootout at Bathurst, and I said that I’ve done this many times before; It’s just a matter of nailing it again,”
“It felt like those two runs that I had today were some of the best laps I’ve ever driven,” said McLaughlin.
An exciting race lays ahead for Indycar fans with 200-laps to get at this coming weekend.
