The heavily-loved Matildas have recently appointed their new head coach, Joe Montemurro, making him the 15th in the team’s history.

The contract deal with Football Australia is three-years-long and runs until the end of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, giving ample time for improvement and epic achievements from the well-loved Tillies, especially over the next nine months – a timeline for a turnaround by the Asia Cup.

This appointment of Montemurro ends what was a long and gruelling 10-month search for Australia’s favourite football team’s new head coach; a process that was not taken lightly by Football Australia, and arguably within reason with the reputation the team have globally.

The opportunity to be head coach is a “Honour of a lifetime” says Montemurro to ABC on the chance to lead the yellow and green team; a team with a whole country’s belief in both the culture of the team and the players.

The 55-year-old Melbournian has previously led the French Giants Lyonnes, only just missing out on an exciting break to lead the CommBank Matildas to the Paris Olympics.

“To be given the opportunity to lead one of the best brands in the world, one of the most exciting teams in the world, and to do it at home, it’s something quite emotional,

“It’s all set up for me to take over and bring it to the next level. Is the Asian Cup winnable? Of course it is. I want to win, I want to win playing a great brand of football.” said new Tillies coach, Montemurro, to ESPN.

Montemurro will be gearing up to put his legacy on the team and their reputation as the Asian Cup looms ahead, the Tillies squad set to head to Perth, WA to battle it out on the pitch against Slovenia later this month.

His previous success in Football runs both here in Australia and globally, leading Arsenal in 2017 where he ushered the club to great achievements in the FA Women’s League Cup. Further excellence under Montemurro has been seen with Arsenal in 2019, the club reigning with the Women’s Super League title.

The Melbournite continued to lead his teams to victory, which was further proven when he joined Juventus Women in 2021, aiding them to reach the Series A title in the 2021/22 season – just to name a few. His resume is one of great success, understanding, and devotion to football as a whole.

Until next time,

Tayla
